Modena Hotel By Somdoon Architects & Creative Crews INTERIORS / 28 MAY 2017 / BY S O I S O U R C E
Housed in a mixed development project comprises offices, retails and F&B venues at a main public transport hub in the heart of Bangkok, a 239-room Modena Hotel occupies an elongated triangular shape land in which unavoidable for the building to be planned along West and East orientation. Therefore the main idea of the façade was designed to prevent heat gain from the sun. The mullion was initiated to be long and slim. It holds the tilted insulated glass panels and cast shades over the vision glass panels. The module of tilted glass panels form the zig zag façade which are straight at all sides and curved when facing the public plaza.
The tip of the triangular site is where the hotel is located. The corner of the hotel was designed to be a sharp triangular blade to enhance this pointy shape of the site. This angle was designed to incorporate the planters at every alternate floors for the hotel guests to have the view of the tree while the people from outside can see the glimpse of soft trees texture behind the pointy glass façade. At the office building, the corner facing the junction also has the alternate planters where the office people can enjoy semi outdoor green area while people from the road can see the trees behind the glass façade.
Modena hotel interior inspired by the dynamic of neighbour buildings and the story of one of the city biggest ports "KhlongToei Pier" served as a main hub for logistic. The texture of shipping containers commen in the area are introduced in seveal parts of the hotel with different assigned colours that represent various areas. The lobby contains bar and lounge that serve as a main enerygy hub for the hotel. Traditional Thai artworks are strategically placed throughout the hotel to narrate the stories of Thai culture in a contemporary context. Modena offers an atmospheric all day dining restaurant inspired by the local wet markets, a genuine Thai way of life.
